Designing Levels for 4kg
Before I started designing levels for 4kg, I took a look at how some popular platformers structured their levels. For instance, the NES Mario games are structured entirely horizontally, like so: Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros. 3 Later on, some of the Mario games began to incorporate a vertical component, or have entirely vertical levels: Super Mario World Super Mario World 2:...

Using Google for Game Development
The development of 4kg is interesting in that it’s being undertaken by two people (Angel, the artist, and myself, the coder/designer) who have never met face-to-face. Since we were both fans of Google already, it seemed natural to try and leverage their services in order to make development and collaboration easier. However, I was surprised at how useful their services really were....

4kg Coding - Night 3
Just a short update tonight as I have to get up a bit early tomorrow. ADB is fixed! Turns out it had nothing to do with drivers or Windows or Eclipse. I just had to reset ADB a couple times and try out a couple different USB ports. I’m just happy I didn’t short circuit one of them (like what happened on my laptop, where plugging anything into the ports would cause it to immediately...

4kg Coding - Night 2
Uh oh. Things are already getting de-railed. I was able to code tonight, but I was unfortunately unable to debug using my ODROID-S. Last night, I tripped over the cord connecting it to my PC, twice. Restarting both multiple times hasn’t helped, unfortunately. Weird thing is that Android recognizes it’s plugged in, with the whole “Disable USB debugging?” and “Mount...

4kg Coding - Night 1
Alright, well this wasn’t the first night, technically. But it was the first time I’ve done something substantial. Before tonight, really the only bit of coding I did was making my own package (andrex.fourkg) and trying to extend the standard Replica Island classes. However, I realized that I’m dealing with a full game here — not a library. Therefore, I decided that I...

Preface: A Disclaimer
Most of the posts on this blog are going to be coding-related. At the beginning, this code will almost exclusively be Android’s flavor of Java. As a disclaimer, I will say this: I am not a coding expert. I’m no guru, no genius. As even the description above points out, I’m an amateur (at best.) Thus the code and techniques I post will likely involve a hefty amount of stupidity....

First!
Isn’t that always the most annoying comment on blogs? I mean really. Anyways, this is indeed the first post I’ve ever done on this weird new Tumblr site. I like it already, I can see why it’s gaining steam. This Tumblr in particular will act as a development blog for the games I make, which are under the self-explanatory moniker “Games by Andrex.” First up is 4kg,...
